Confronting Depression and Anxiety

A recent study published in “The Lancet” spoke to what many of us know. What is it that we know? That this Covid era witnessed a dramatic increase in depression and anxiety. (LINK)

It is easy to think – for those battling with depression and anxiety – that we come to these struggles alone. Evidence suggests otherwise and points to a larger grey malaise settling over many communities.

As a Pastor, I don’t have air-tight “solutions” to offer – a chipper list of “Three Ways to Live Your Best Life Now.” What I do know is there are times for professional help, and you remain the best judge when its time seek professional support.

I know as well what spirituality offers.

A spiritual life continually comes down to the realization that there is always a bigger “holding” as it were, an acknowledgement that God is with us. Likewise, a spiritual life can pull us into closer connection with others around the very core of the human experience. A phrase employed way too much because it is way too accurate is that we are here to appeal to the “better angels of our nature” both individually and as a community. Spirituality points directly at those “better angels.”

So, a spiritual life will not eliminate the depression and anxiety many of us experience. What it will do is draw us closer to God and to each other as we experience those things.

Simply put – the spiritual life offers this – it is better to travel through darkness with friends.

The sun will shine again.

Community Service

Thanksgiving Food Collection #newchurchlivegives

There are 3 ways to get involved this Thanksgiving:
1. Donate any nonperishable at church on Sunday or to the office during the week. (Office address: 2790 Huntingdon Pike, Bryn Athyn)
2. Shop via our Amazon wish list and have items delivered directly to our office.
3. Donate to an organization local to you, take a picture and tag us #newchurchlivegives. We will share the images at church and on social media.

Do you live local to the Philadelphia area? Are you interested in volunteering at St. Francis Inn? St. Francis Inn is a homeless shelter serving dinner to the homeless in Kensington. They serve dinner “restaurant style” to the addicted and homeless population. There are groups going down at least twice per month. For an up to date list of service opportunities follow along on the Facebook group “New Church Live Friends of Saint Francis Inn”
