It is tempting to define love purely as an emotional experience. But what if love was something more than just the passing feeling, as pleasant as it might be? What if love was the ultimate reality?
If love was that – the ultimate reality – consider the wonderful implications.
First, it moves love from the transitory to the foundational. While we may be asleep to love, while for a variety of reasons it may lie beyond our accessibility, if love is foundational, love always is, regardless of our feelings. Love can exist even without our feeling it.
Secondly, such a paradigm shifts love from transactional to transformative. Emotions remain largely transaction in nature. We experience “x”; we feel “y.” But if love never in a sense “goes” or “leaves”, that means love’s very stability makes it transformative. It then changes lives. It then holds the whole thing regardless of our experience of it, its reality anchored in God and therefore anchored beyond our particular, temporal whims.
With a smile – love can then even hold not feeling in love!
This matters. This matters a great deal.
We approach the need to feel love with almost an addictive yearning. But what if instead we approached love as God’s gift within, not as something we frenetically cast about in our lives to find somehow “out there” but instead as the ultimate grounding into what actually matters, what is true, and what lasts? What if such a love became the creative force in our lives? (Which I believe is God’s will)
That would be love in a new light!
“Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” Maya Angelou
