New Church Christianity in many ways comes down to a few simple tenets of faith.
1. We are held, eternally, by the immense love of God
2. Life on this earth is a constant mix of the blessed and the broken
3. Throughout that, God’s unceasing endeavor, His divine providence, is to bring us “home”, to bring us to heaven
4. We cooperate with God in that process when we push aside destructive tendencies and embrace a life of service
This perspective, in subtle ways, is revolutionary despite its obvious logic. It steers between one pole that holds we are so broken, so powerless, that the only, desperate hope of our salvation is believing that Jesus died for ours sins (the blood atonement theory) or the counter – that we are eminently powerful, not powerless, able through prayer and resolute living to have God bless us with health and material bounty (the prosperity gospel). Neither of those work for me.
It is why it is so refreshing to read Christian authors who settle deeply into the brokenness of life with humor, grace, and honesty. Kate Bowler, Anne Lamott, Brené Brown are three who do it exceptionally well.
None of them offer platitudes or quick formulaic answers. They do offer the gritty determination to meet the thisness of life. Life as it is. THIS life. As it is.
We crave, often, easy, and optimistic answers. Into that, it is wonderful to have authors who say clearly that Christian or not, some days are indeed very hard – blessed of course, and very hard.
