What Problem Are We Trying To Solve?

The world is filled with interesting problems. Churches often tend to distill all spiritual problems into the simplistic question of salvation. “How can I be saved?”

The question lands awkwardly on many modern ears in an era not attuned to religious language. Saved from what? Saved for what?

What can our faith offer to that question of salvation?

Maybe we can start here – that salvation can never be severed from vocation. That salvation, as it were, deeply embeds itself in a call around how we live life NOW. How we choose. How we reach out. How we serve. That is the path Jesus laid out for us.

His 3-year earthly ministry filled itself addressing interesting problems both in word and deed. How do we handle disease? Sin? Power? Money? Fear? In essence the question shifted: “How can I be saved?” moved to “How can we serve?”

I loved reading Seth Godin’s blog on the question of what problem are we trying to solve. In speaking of businesses, he could just as easily have been speaking of churches.

Many small businesses run into trouble because they start in a different place–the question they ask is: how does the owner make a living? Serving the customer comes second when the owner is focused too much on sunk costs and bills due.

Over time, successful businesses figure out how to align their goals with the customers they serve.
Even Beanie Babies solved a problem for someone.

So, our goals, friends, must align with those we serve, and that includes God, and in so doing, we will learn to serve with open hearts together.
