Community service trip to St. Francis Inn
NewChurch LIVE strives to be inclusive and non-judgmental in accepting and caring for people. This is how we create community. Near the NCL headquarters in the Philadelphia region, the Kensington neighborhood is home to many people who live day to day on the streets, in public facilities, or struggling to make ends meet. Please consider joining our core team who serve here regularly and find the experience both humbling and transformational. There is power in small acts of kindness, delivered and received respectfully.
St. Francis Inn supports the homeless and addicted population located in Kensington. The Inn serves dinner, restaurant style, to its guests as a way of providing food with dignity.
There is no meal preparation at this service opportunity – food is donated by local businesses and meals are prepared by the regular staff. Volunteers will arrive and be given a job for the duration of the meal. Jobs may including filling plates, greeting and serving guests, clearing and resetting tables, loading dishwashers, and assisting the staff with sorting, organizing, or cleanup.
There is no A/C so dress accordingly in summer months, as it can get very hot.
Meals are provided for as many guests as possible, and sometimes more than 300 people line up for their turn at a table. Please wear comfortable shoes, as much of the volunteer work is on your feet.
When you sign up there are 2 options for transportation:
- Drive yourself and meet the group at the St. Francis Inn.
- Meet at the office and caravan down together (preferred). Often 1 or 2 drivers are needed. Let us know if you are comfortable driving.
St. Francis Inn is located at 2441 Kensington Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19125
There is no dedicated parking at St. Francis Inn, so be prepared to find street parking in the area.
For a typical weekday visit, the NCL group will meet at the office at 3pm and caravan down. All drivers must plan on arriving at St. Francis Inn by 4pm. Volunteers will receive assignments, serve the meal, and assist the staff with cleaning up. Typically volunteers are home by 7pm. Occasional trips occur on weekends, and alternate timing will be provided as part of the organizational planning.
