And the Soul Felt Its Worth

18th, December 2025

Description

As we move toward Christmas, I find myself returning to that haunting hymn line, “the soul felt its worth,” and sitting with what it actually means in daily life. When God comes close, our sense of value shifts, quietly, almost imperceptibly, away from self-preoccupation and toward love in motion. I talk about infants because they reveal something holy and true. They seem powerless, yet everything orbits around them. They draw us outward, even if only for a moment, and in that outward pull our anxieties loosen their grip. This is where the soul knows its worth, not as ego or self-esteem, but as a conduit, a vessel through which God’s love and wisdom can flow into the world. Humility combined with competence carries real power. I invite us to practice a simple discipline that changes everything. Ask what you want for others, not what you want from them. Let that desire shape your prayers, your choices, your attention. As we do, the soul begins to feel its worth in a grounded, peaceful way, and life becomes a very different, and very good, ball game.
