One bridge goes up. The other goes down.

As I grow older, I begin to see two bridges crossing my life. One goes down as my body changes, names slip away, and I feel more of life’s limits. The other rises. Swedenborg describes how we gradually move beyond truths that merely appear true and come to what is actually true: “God is never angry, never punishes, much less does evil.” That changes everything. I find myself less interested in controlling other people’s choices and more able to simply hold them with love, offering truth when it is needed without making love contingent on their response. This is the beautiful bridge going up: a deeper confidence that God loves us, an ever-widening capacity to reflect that love, and the humbling realization that there’s no end to how loving you can become.
