We Must Serve

24th, September 2025

Description

Here’s my heart this morning: I keep returning to the gold of love and the silver of truth, because when love feels fuzzy, truth points the way to what the loving thing to do is. We must serve. Love, wisdom, and use belong together like a living triangle, two wings lifting the heart through useful service. Service pulls us free from the self-esteem trap and turns life outward toward the common good. Adam Grant’s simple lens helps me choose in real time: “fix, help or serve.” Fix has its place in an operating room. Help can shade into control, as Anne Lamott warns. Serve feels different. Serve has really soft edges. It watches the moment. It leans in. On a train dash in England, a police officer jogged over after we’d already moved on and said, “oh, by the way,” then gave the directions we needed. Two minutes. Warmth for hours. My wife and I find this joy in different spots, from St. Francis Inn to a hospital June Fete Community Fair. Ordinary jobs become holy when they lift someone else. I pray you notice the small doorways today. Service should not feel like drudgery. It is where we come alive. I trust the Lord to give a dozen opportunities today to serve right where you stand.
