Why repent? In Swedenborgian thought, repentance is not about guilt or shame—it’s about returning home to our true, God-given self. The word “sin” means “missing the mark,” and repentance is simply re-aligning ourselves with divine love and wisdom. At our core, beneath all the distractions, anxieties, and struggles, lies our inmost, the sacred space where God is constantly present. The Lord calls us to clear away what stands in the way so we can live in the fullness of His love (Secrets of Heaven §9334). True repentance isn’t about fear—it’s about freedom. It’s about rediscovering the joy of living in harmony with heaven, because deep down, we are made for goodness.
