The Heartfelt Thing

Here’s how I share it with you this morning: I return to the two great commandments, “Love the Lord your God, love your neighbor,” and I let them move from something out there to something living in here. Scripture calls us to love God with all the heart and soul, and Swedenborg helps us see the path on the ground: “What comes from the heart comes from the Lord” (I read that line and breathe). Love begins as worship, becomes a way of being, and shows itself in use. It looks like choosing the person right in front of you. It looks like struggle, too. We learn love through hard choices, through giving up what blocks compassion, through temptations that grow us. “Love is a verb.” We practice by offering one real, unpolished, heartfelt note, text, or call. No pretense. The satisfaction that follows runs deeper than comfort, because heaven’s joy is in doing good for others from love of doing it.
