Immediate and Forever

6th, May 2026

Description

Forgiveness sits at the heart of our spiritual life, and yet it can feel almost impossible. I find myself returning again and again to Jesus’ words from the cross, “Father, forgive them, they don’t know what they’re doing,” and asking what that kind of love looks like in real, messy life. From a Swedenborgian perspective, we are given this striking vision that forgiveness is “immediate and forever.” It sounds unreachable at first. Still, over time, through spiritual growth, distance from hurt, and the quiet work of God and the angels within us, something begins to shift. I have seen it in my own life. What once felt unbearable softens. The grip loosens. Eventually we arrive at a place where we can release it fully, almost as if it had always been that way. Along the way, we learn humility. We stop playing the role of the one who doles out mercy from above and instead become conduits of a forgiveness that belongs to God. We begin to understand that “forgiveness creates the bridge over which we too must pass.” And so we practice. We stumble. We place what we cannot yet forgive into God’s hands. Then slowly, quietly, we are shaped into people who carry less judgment, fewer expectations, and a deeper peace that reflects heaven itself.
