The Sacred in the Ordinary

10th, July 2026

Description

I keep coming back to Father Gregory Boyle’s line about Holy Supper: “God’s not worried we’ll forget it’s sacred. He’s worried we’ll forget it’s ordinary.” That lands deep for me, because Swedenborg keeps pointing us toward a faith that comes alive in use, in love, in the actual life we are living. Around a table. Over food. In a good question. In the courage to share a story and make room for someone else’s. Eucharist means to give thanks, and maybe that is where the sacred begins to open up, right in the middle of our everyday lives. Table fellowship becomes communion. Gratitude becomes worship. A simple meal starts to feel like heaven touching earth, “as in heaven, so upon the earth.” So this weekend, I want to ask us to look again. Where can we bring the sacred into the ordinary? Where can we be still enough to see that every moment can just have that sacredness in it?
