Be Curious

This weekend, I invite us to practice a beautiful spiritual virtue: curiosity that grows out of love. In Secrets of Heaven 3145, Swedenborg writes, “A well-motivated desire for truth creates freedom.” When fear sends our minds into catastrophizing (even over a possible sinkhole) loving curiosity draws us back to the present and to the person right in front of us. It opens our ears to someone else’s story and helps us loosen the ego’s need for attention or accolades. In the Swedenborgian Christian tradition, this is part of the radical spiritual shift toward lovingly serving others, with humility, grace, and sometimes even the courage to say a hard thing when love calls for it. May we be curious in this way, radiating outward from love, and find a little more freedom from worry as we do.
