Finding Hope in Hard Times: Living in the Tragic Gap
13th, October 2026Description
There is a tender, sometimes painful space between the life we long for and the life we actually face. I call it the gap between what we want and what we have. The tragic gap. Our hopes matter, and so does the hurt we carry. Finding hope in hard times means allowing God to help us hold both in the spirit of love. I see this so clearly in the Easter story, where grief and resurrection belong to the same unfolding story, and in Jesus’ willingness to meet people right where they are. Swedenborg’s understanding of divine providence reminds us that the Lord continually guides us toward goodness, while a life of charity gives that love practical expression through service. Here. In our ordinary lives. As I reflect on Richard Rohr’s Falling Upward, I return to this thought: “God arrives in our lives disguised as our lives.” Even in the tension, God meets us. Together, let’s make room for His presence, keep our hearts open to possibility, and serve where we can. This is where change begins, within us and in the communities we love.
