What is the Soul?

As we enter this Thanksgiving week together, I feel a quiet gratitude rise in me. Each of us carries a soul, the inmost part of who we are. Swedenborg says it clearly in Secrets of Heaven 2973: “Goodness flows in from the Lord through the soul into the body, and fills the body with light.” I see that light in the way a song can move us. I see it in the stillness of a walk outside or in the tears that come during a tender moment. Something deep calls out, and something deep answers. Our soul anchors us to heaven and also serves as a passage for God’s love to flow into the world. During this season, I am struck by how this shared gift draws us closer. It forms a quiet communion of hearts. It reminds us that every person carries a radiant center shaped by God. There is no hierarchy here. Only a shared holiness we can honor. So we move gently into this week, grateful for the soul within and the souls around us.
