Where Is God in Suffering?

Where is God in suffering? It is a question we carry when life hurts, whether we struggle ourselves or stand beside someone we love. As I reflect on Etty Hillesum’s spiritual journey in An Interrupted Life, another question opens my heart: “What can we be for God here, even in this suffering?” Sit with that for a moment. Swedenborg’s understanding of charity as love put into useful action invites us to give that question a place in our everyday lives. We can become God’s “ambassadors,” offering compassion with humility and soft edges, without an agenda. A listening ear. A gentle presence. Some small kindness within our reach. Today, I invite us to ask how we can be there for God by caring for one another, then take a step toward living that answer.
