Freedom of Hell, Freedom of Heaven

This week, I’m inviting us to explore a powerful spiritual truth: freedom isn’t just doing whatever we crave. True freedom flows from love. Swedenborg teaches in Secrets of Heaven that there’s a freedom from hell that comes from self-indulgence, and a freedom from heaven that comes from love for God and neighbor (Secrets of Heaven §2870). Whether we’re talking about food, sexuality, or any deep desire, the direction we choose makes all the difference. One path isolates us; the other binds us together in joy. As I share in the message, it’s not about becoming rigid or ashamed of craving. It’s about gently shifting our intention, asking: how can I come from love here? There’s a cascade effect when we do that. A ripple of peace, connection, and meaning that only heaven’s kind of freedom brings. And the beauty is, we already have everything we need to start walking that way.
