The Bad Cholesterol of the Soul

There is a holy art of subtraction. Today I want to talk about the “bad cholesterol” of the soul, those compulsions, distortions, jealousies, anger, drama, gossip, and cravings that keep God’s goodness from flowing freely through us. Swedenborg puts it beautifully in Secrets of Heaven when he says that “the only thing required of us is to clean house,” because “goodness is constantly flowing in from the Lord.” That is gospel. That is good news. We do not have to manufacture grace. The good stuff is already there. Good’s the default. Our work is to notice what blocks it and humbly ask, “Lord, what would I be without this thought?” Sometimes the most honest prayer is simply, “God, I can’t. You can. I’m asking.” And as God helps us clear what clogs the heart, life begins to move again with clarity, groundedness, love, and connection. That flow is where God intends us to be, and that place is called Heaven.
