Bright Sadness

28th, October 2026

Description

Dear friends, why does spiritual growth sometimes bring us to tears even as our joy deepens? Today on 10 Minutes of Morning Calm, I reflect on “bright sadness,” a beautiful insight from Richard Rohr’s Falling Upward. Through our Swedenborgian Christian New Church perspective, we explore the shift “from head to heart,” as what we love begins to shape how we understand and respond to life. Tenderness grows. So does our awareness of another person’s pain. Compassion means “to suffer with,” and opening our hearts allows us to sit beside someone in their heartbreak without rushing to solve everything. Here we find “a wisdom that’s born of love.” It can hurt to care this deeply. Yet in God’s providence, our joys and sorrows expand our capacity to understand one another and remain present. Apathy is the enemy. Join me as we embrace what bright sadness has to teach us, then settle into stillness, prayer, and the reassurance of the Lord’s blessing.
