Loss of Common Humanity

2nd, September 2025

Description

Here’s my heart for you today: when “we lose our common humanity, we have a loss of the common good and things fly apart in a hurry.” I see it in news cycles, in fractured towns, then in a moment of crisis we remember we belong to each other. Swedenborg names the core issue with bracing clarity: when goodness and truth ebb, “no more faith” means “no more charity,” which means no more service, and winter settles over the church (Secrets of Heaven 2905). So I invite you to the small, living remedies God loves. Share a meal. Serve with a team. Strike up one brave conversation with someone you barely know. I think of a wedding in Wildwood, an uncle and I laughing about turning sixty and time shifting under our feet, and right there it happens again, the rediscovery of that thread we all hold. Thomas Merton says, “the gate of heaven is everywhere.” We are reminded, “Be still and know that I am God.” The Internet can shout and sell alarm. We choose the quiet path of presence. God plants new seeds in that soil. We notice. We smile. We serve. And the common good grows.
