The Ache of Dysfunction

10th, June 2026

Description

Today we talk about “the ache of dysfunction,” those small family quirks that almost make us laugh and the deeper patterns that quietly shape the whole room. Dysfunction can become “the water in which we swim,” until everyone starts orbiting one person, one wound, one old story. Jesus offers another way: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” In Swedenborgian terms, peace is not avoidance. It is order, wholeness, shalom, the soul slowly turning back toward what feels like home because God made us for heaven. So we practice becoming a lighthouse. Steady. Humble. Clear. We stop running up and down the beach trying to save everyone, because “No lighthouse ever saved anyone running around a beach.” Instead, we root ourselves in the better angels of our nature, let God’s peace become visible through us, and trust that over time a calmer presence can help a family system find its way toward truth, mercy, and home.
