This is NOT a Test

In this morning’s message, we explore the deep truth that life is not a test from God. While we all experience blessings and excruciating challenges, it’s easy to slip into the belief that God is “testing” us to see how faithful we are. But love, true love, doesn’t work that way. As Swedenborg writes, “God never tests anyone… He is constantly delivering us from our struggles so far as He can” (Secrets of Heaven §2768). God is not sending hardship to evaluate us, but walking with us through it, always focused on the goodness He can bring from our trials. Just like a loving parent, God never tests us to prove our love. He simply loves us unconditionally. So when we face life’s hardest moments, our call is to “look for the helpers,” as Mr. Rogers said, and trust that divine compassion is always present. That’s the kind of God I believe in. A God whose love lifts us, never weighs us down.
