The Ache of Loneliness

11th, June 2026

Description

We all know what Dorothy Day calls “the long loneliness.” In this reflection, we sit with that ache honestly, returning to Genesis where God says, “It is not good for man to be alone,” and to the Swedenborgian conviction that providence keeps drawing us toward connection, use, and love made visible. Loneliness differs from sacred time alone; it pulls us away from the better angels of our nature. So we ask: who can we tell the truth to? Who can tell the truth to us? Real friendship grows past shared interests, past the algorithm’s rabbit holes, into something deeper and braver. Sometimes it begins by joining the small group we almost skipped. Sometimes it begins with a simple note: “Just thinking about you today. Wishing you all the best. Lots of love.” Again and again, spiritual life becomes practical, a reaching out and a reaching in, a choice to bring joy, to show up, to connect with people who share that kind of love, and to trust that God keeps drawing us home.
